The Legal 100: A Ranking of the Individuals Who Have Most Influenced the Law, by Darien A. McWhirter

From Library Journal

A Book of Legal Lists makes no pretense of being "the" book on the subject. It is not the work of a committee but the personal selections of University of Tulsa law professor and constitutional law scholar Schwartz. Schwartz presents a point/counterpoint of the ten best and ten worst?the best and worst Supreme Court justices, non-Supreme Court judges, opinions, dissents, opinions, etc.?in all categories but lawyers, legal movies, and trials, where only the best are cited. The lists themselves are interesting and thought-provoking, but the real strength of the book lies in short annotations that present readable, concise, and authoritative background for each item. The book is capped off with a challenging list of 150 legal trivia questions. McWhirter's The Legal 100 is at once more limited and broader in scope. It focuses exclusively on people, listing "individuals who have most influenced the law" whom the author has chosen on the basis of questionnaires submitted by law professors. As one would expect, many of the same names appear in both compilations. The Legal 100 gives itself the latitude to include more people, and the reader will find more extensive listings of lawyers, law teachers, and legal philosophers. Each entry comes with a short biography and an assessment of the listee's contribution to the law. Both books are highly recommended as ready reference for all libraries.?Patrick Petit, Catholic Univ. Law Lib., Washington, D.C.Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

The Legal 100: A Ranking of the Individuals Who Have Most Influenced the LawThe author Darien A. McWhirter is a law professor, attorney, and social scientist (Ph.D. in political science). The 100 people in this book were selected as those who had “the most impact on” the evolution of Anglo American law. Not all of the people listed here are lawyers. Lawyers have played an important role in bringing democracy, individual freedom, and economic prosperity; sometimes at great personal sacrifice. This list was derived from law professors at American law schools. The ranking is by the author alone. The ‘Preface’ explains his choices. Most of the people listed here led lives that could make interesting films. This book is written for a general audience. Placing these people in historical order would be more educational. The ‘Introduction’ provides “A Brief History of Western and Anglo American Law” in 25 pages, the most important part of this book. The beginnings of Western civilization are generally attributed to the Sumerians, the land between the Tigris and Euphrates. Hammurabi’s code is the oldest complete law code (p.2). The Hittite law code is another complete corpus juris. Modern law codes differ in degree rather than kind. They are concerned with interpersonal relationships and property regulations. The Jewish Bible reflects Babylonian law, and these concepts were carried over to Christianity. The problems of Athens resulted in rewritten laws by Solon. The new Roman republic resulted in new laws, the Code of the Twelve Tables, which are lost to us (p.4). The Romans invented the idea of a judge and a lawyer for each side. The idea of natural law from classical times informed the English common law which is in use today (p.5). Justinian reorganized the laws for the modern times of the sixth century AD; this formed the basis for the laws on the continent. The ‘Dark Ages’ saw the codification of feudal law, where leaders gave goods to supporters in return for loyalty (this describes politics today). The Roman Catholic Church developed its Canon Law which influenced national laws (p.6). Kings attacked the jurisdiction of Church courts to expand their own power (and collect the fines). Lord Chancellors developed the idea of doing what was fair and equitable for people (p.9). The ideas of Locke and Montesquieu are reflected in the U.S. Constitution. The American Revolution is marked by the Declaration of Independence; most of the signers were lawyers (p.12). Three brilliant lawyers worked out compromises for the Republic (p.13). [McWhirter doesn’t tell you that the “right to privacy” was invented to stop publishing photographs of the rich and powerful (p.18). And that corporations like the Rockefellers and Carnegies were behind Prohibition (p.16).]Regulation of business was started by Disraeli when the excesses of capitalists harmed the powerful British aristocracy (p.19) [who still own most land in England]. Theodore Roosevelt passed anti trust and regulation of giant monopolies. The 1950s and 1960s saw new protections for people’s rights (p.20). [The Miranda Warning was a return to older standards.] The end of Napoleon was followed by multinational treaties (p.22). Many lawyers helped to safeguard legal rights for the accused (p.23). Legal systems tended to regulate business and protect consumers and the environment. Other political questions are listed on page 25.If you have read about some of the 100 people you would know the few pages omit much. Erle Stanley Gardner (and others) founded ‘The Court of Last Resort’ to free the wrongfully convicted. His novels educated the public about the law and the need for forensic sciences. The author’s selection of #100 suggests something about both of them. Can society, or humans, be improved if only laws were changed? Did Prohibition work? Does political freedom require economic freedom? Can we have democracy when most people are poor and 2% are super rich? Would fewer laws result in a happier society? If things were “better” in the 1960s was it the laws of the economy? Can humanity ever be happy?

It offers a top 100 legal list of attorneys, jurists, judges, statesmen, philosophers and political theorists through the ages that have a profound influence on Western Jurisprudence. The Legal 100 places a particular emphasis on Anglo-American law. I guess this book is fairly balanced ideologically. Though, it has quite a few figures who organized the law for the purpose of 'legal plunder.' Granted, they've had a profound influence on contemporary law too. It is probably one of those books like Black's Law Dictionary, that every student of law should have. My only gripe is that the classical liberal statesmen and economist, Frederic Bastiat, was not included.Sampling of the top 50: 1. James Madison; 2. Alexander Hamilton; 3. John Marshall; 4. Cicero; 5. Daniel Webster; 6. Clarence Darrow; 7. William Mansfield; 8. Thomas Eskine; 9. Edward M. Hall; 10. Earl Warren; 11. Edward Coke; 12. Francis Bacon; 13. William Blackstone; 14. James Kent; 15. George Wythe; 16. John Locke; 17. Montesquieu; 18. Olier Wendell Holmes; 19. Louis D. Brandeis; 20. John Marshall Harlan; 21. Aristotle; 22. Jeremy Bentham; 23. John Stuart Mill; 24. John Austin; 25. Karl Marx; 26. Earl Rogers; 27. Charles Evans Hughes; 28. Hugo Black; 29. William O. Douglas; 31. Hammurabi; 32. Solon; 33. Justinian I; 34. Henry II; 35. Edward I; 36. Napoleon Bonaparte; 37. Benjamin Disraeli; 38. William Gladstone; 39. Theodore Roosevelt; 40. Woodrow Wilson; 41. Franklin D. Roosevelt; 42. Lyndon Baines Johnson; 43. Christopher Langdell; 44. Roscoe Pound; 45. Benjamin Cardozo; 46. Lemuel Shaw; 47. Mary Wollstonecraft; 48. William Godwin; 49. Mohandas Gandhi; and 50. Susan B. Anthony. Other luminaries included are: Thurgood Marshall Edmund Burke, Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson, Joseph Story, John C. Calhoun, Otto von Bismark and V.I. Lenin.

It is well-written, easy to follow, and gives a concise view of the Old Testament. I think it is good for beginners, but there would have to be more research to find a balance (it shouldn't be the end all, be all) on Old Testament views. It is; however, a great book to have in your library if you are a student (and believer) of the Bible.

It is difficult to find a reasonably priced, scholarly yet easily readable OT Intro text. I had been using the Boadt READING THE OLD TESTAMENT, which I enjoyed, when our professor recommended Ceresko's book as a good and more recent alternative. If a person were to study both of these texts, paying attention to the bibliographies, one would be well served.

no page number!Beside the page number problem, there is nothing else to complaint about. In general, I would rate it good product!

very informative, just what I needed for my class. Has a convincing argument as to how the old testament was composed.

Studying the OT can be very difficult if you do not have a good guide. Biblical commentaries are also very book-centric and cannot give you the overall setting and historical justification! So, this book rocks! I just love Ceresko's approach to social justice and I am a very conservative person. He explores the fact that the early Israelites were nomads. Struggling to find land and leadership of their own. He gives the reader a very good, easy to understand view of times before, during and post-exilic (after Babylonian exile). Great overview of the prophets. The content is accurate and backed up with facts and references. The reading level is between high school and college, but not too difficult. worth it! give it a try!

I am so pleased with this purchase. It was right on time for my classes and has proved its weight many times over. I have shared the text with others and encouraged them to purchase their own copy for their own personal library and future references from Amazon.com. I cannot imagine anyone ignoring the opportunity to purchase their own text books at great prices!!!

Textbook for a class on the OT. I have heard some of the ideas before, but the treatment here is sytematic and puts ideas in perspective.I've skimmed the chapters on the Pentateuch and history, but not the wisdom books and prophets. I'm looking forward to the class.

I really enjoyed reading Anthony Ceresko's book. It was comprehensive in scope with brief summations of the entire text, highlighting important verses. My only reservation is that Liberation was mentioned in the intro and the conclusion, but was not a dominate theme throughout the body of the work. I have found Dr. Jose P. Miranda's books, "Marx and the Bible" and "Being and the Messiah" to focus exclusively on the liberation theme of justice. Ceresko's book is mainly an academic treatment of the OT, presenting the scholarly views of the text and discoveries in archaeology that contribute to the context of the OT, but not focusing on the theme of liberation or social justice as prominently as Miranda. Overall, I did enjoy reading an academic treatment of the text and the author provided much commentary and analysis instead of just summarizing the OT as Sweeney does in his intro.

A Letter for Daria, by Ekaterina Gordeeva

From Publishers Weekly

Russian figure-skating champion Gordeeva follows up My Sergei, a tender tribute to her late husband and skating partner, with this equally sentimental collection of musings and advice for her daughter, Daria. Within a very loose chronology, Gordeeva shares memories of Daria's birth in 1992 and the hectic but happy family life she enjoyed until Sergei Grinkov's sudden and unexpected death three years later. But this is no maudlin recounting; Gordeeva reflects on the joys of her life and clearly expresses her hopes and dreams for her daughter in encouraging, nurturing words. Readers will take away a strong sense of familyAespecially in passages where Gordeeva stresses the importance of Russian babushkas (notably her own grandmother and great-grandmother) as an essential support system, and will detect their loving bonds in the numerous color photographs. The book has a rambling feel with no formal organization, and phrasing and sentence structure occasionally remind readers that English is not Gordeeva's native language. But regardless of format, Gordeeva's sincerity shines through and her life philosophy is one that will inspire many. Ages 8-up. Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5AGold-medal winner Gordeeva writes to her six-year-old daughter in this autobiographical letter. Each of the nine short chapters touches on a different aspect or time in the skater's life. Although the easy-to-read text is clearly written and concise, Gordeeva does not go into depth about her or her late husband's lives. She touches on a few differences between Russian and American cultures, her feelings about training, and her thoughts on religion, and shares some of her hopes and dreams for both her and her daughter's futures. The result is a charming story through which readers can peek into the life and thoughts of a star athlete. Uncaptioned full-color photographs depict the happy family life the author describes. Although it will not suit the needs of report writers, this heartfelt account of an athlete's struggles and triumphs will enhance both sports and biography collections.ABarb Lawler, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, PACopyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Straight from a mother's heart! Loved the way Katia put her thoughts down for her sweet baby during a very difficult time in her life. I couldn't help but be touched deeply by this, as well as the other book she wrote, My Sergei: A Love Story, during this time in her life.

I was a real fan of Gordeeva and Grinkov and bought Katia's book, MY SERGEI, which was wonderful. This new book doesn't contain much information and doesn't have as many pictures as I would like. It is really designed for children.

I bought this product on Dec 10 and still I can not track this product, I don't know where it is or if it is on the way...

I'm really glad I picked up this book. First off, it is a book that you can easily read in a single sitting. The family photos just add to the book.Ekaterina's writing is very personal. It made me want to continue reading the book. I was a little disappointed when I reached the end, not because there were parts of the book that I didn't like, but because I wanted the book to keep going. I wanted to read more. She is such a strong woman and has an amazing family. One part of her life is a situation that I'm currently going through. Reading how she handled it and bettered herself is an inspiration to me.Why doesn't the US celebrate International Women's Day?

This book is so sweet and cute, mostly filled with pictures, Katia Gordeeva writes a very touching letter to her little daughter Dasha. She tells her of life in both America and Russia, what her hopes for her daughter are, who she is in figure skating and what challenges there are. She also talks about Daria's father and tells her how they were such a happy family and one day they will see him. An excellent heartfelt book.

Obviously a previous reader didn't actually read this book since Katia doesn't talk about aborting her child in A Letter for Daria. This book is full of stunning pictures and you can see the love and happiness within this family. The story to her daughter is wonderful. Maybe this book will start a trend-all mothers should write journals to their children. I wish mine had.

I read this after finishing "My Sergei", and was just as pleased. In this book, Ekaterina gives glimpses of her life through narrations and pictures, since the lose of her husband, and wishes for her daughter Daria. Ekaterina truly does seem like a courageous, kind hearted, family oriented, loving mother! It seems nothing can keep her down! I really enjoyed this book as well as "My Sergei"

A letter for Daria, is one of the most beautiful and creative books I have seen in a long time. It is a book written for Ekaterina Gordeeva's daughter Daria, by Ekaterina....and done so with respect, wisdom, insight, and even some humor. It shows the great love that Ekaterina has for her daughter, and in many respects it shows to the reader how important family ties are, and that happiness is family.
