I was real happy to see this finally being investigated and written about. For many years, I wondered about what the true story was, if we would ever know who did it or why. We still don't have all the answers, but it has helped me see a lot more of the picture back then. I lived in the acres, on the streets where some of these kids lived. They hung out at my parents house, were friends with my brother, and most were pretty good kids. Then things changed. Lavigne came , he was the priest at my church. We heard rumors, and things became different. I didn't like him, but didn't know why. Felt uncomfortable. He was a bit creepy. Anyway, I left for a while, and that was when I found out what happened to Danny. When I got back, no one really talked about it. Reading this book filled in all the questions I had. I was so angry to see all the abuse that these kids i knew went thru. It explained their attitudes. I felt so much hurt for them and anger that the church cared so little about them and only about their pedophile priests. I was shocked to see just how far this has gone, and am horrified that so little is done. Thank you so much for exposing this travesty, this disgusting game that the church plays with people's lives.
I've been interested in this case for months and had yet to find a comprehensive discussion, both of the case and the Catholic abuse scandals that occurred later. This book is that comprehensive discussion.Not only does it detail the many flaws that plagued the case, but also the culpability of the Springfield Diocese, and by extension the Catholic Church, in the abuses perpetrated by the priesthood.While a little too detailed in some respects related to the abuses, and therefore I should mention a triggering of PTSD is possible in the reading of certain sections/chapters, it still managed to paint the whole picture concisely.
Having first hand knowledge of the episode, and knowing the family as well as growing up in the same neighborhood, I purchased the book to review the events as well as check the accuracy of the authors portrayal. I must say that it was quite factual throughout in all areas. There is certainly plenty of blame to go around in this tragic event.
This was a very spooky book for me to read. I knew many of the people and places in the book including Danny, his brothers and the 16 acres community. I was never aware that the Springfield diocese had so much influence on the city as the author claims....this left me wondering. I was also surprised to read that there were several other potential suspects not pursued by police because of a focus on Lavigne. There was something contradictory about this point left unexplained. I was also left wondering why the various police entities botched handling the evidence and investigation. Was this because the police were incompetent bumblers or was something more sinister or otherwise unusual involved? Lastly, I was not at all surprised to read about the awful conduct of the priests and the church hierarchy and I skimmed through the parts where the author catalogs priestly crimes unrelated to the murder. Overall I would recommend the book especially for anyone even remotely familiar with this tragic murder.
An important contribution to the research on abuse and cover-up in the Catholic hierarchy, EJ Fleming provides a detailed synthesis of finally opened source material connecting the sexual abuse of a priest and the complicity of a sexually abusive bishop to the murder of Danny Croteau in 1972. Readers new to this area of true crime must understand that there is no "freedom of information" process for citizens or writers that applies to Catholic records on complaints about clergy. Therefore, it's predictable that files, stories, and testimony must be excavated decades after the events have taken place. That means when and IF such buried materials are released, if and when people come forward--precluding purges of official records, the deaths of witnesses, and/or "confidentiality clauses" in church settlements with victims. EJ Fleming's book does the heavy lifting and performs a vital public service. This book is a wake-up call that the crisis and the damage of abuse in the Catholic system is far from over.

The case remains unsolved, but the primary suspect was and still is a Catholic priest, defrocked decades later for abuse, who still lives in the state.With ties to the Western Massachusetts area, I have followed periodic new leads over the years, including restarted investigations hoping to finally nail the killer...all to no avail. I thought I knew all there was to know, but this book is extremely comprehensive and covers new material, and it will open minds to the possibility of new and/or additional suspects.Due to the profession of both the primary and many potential suspects, it is also an exhaustive history of abuse by clergy in the region, and it names names (some of which I had not previously heard). It also covers political players at the time and their inbred relationship with a then very powerful Diocese of Springfield.Gets a little repetitive in some areas, but overall excellent read. Highly recommended. (Note: The most appropriate category for this book is True Crime.)
Well researched and written. I grew up in western Massachusetts as a Catholic and am aware of some the priests mentioned in the book. Honestly I don't know how anyone can remain a Catholic after knowing how deep this behavior goes back and how it was covered up all the way to the Vatican. Author clearly highlights the massive cover up of abuse by the demonic priests of the Catholic church.
E. J. Fleming has complied the most accurate depiction of who Fr. Lavigne was, and how he stalked those he abused. The book is compelling yet heart wrenching for those of us who knew the victims and the priest who did nothing. I would suggest everyone read this book to understand pedophiles and how they work. Excellently written, you are compelled to keep reading.
