As life would have it, a friend of mine had this book and I borrowed it. Liked it so much that I just placed an order here for it.This is a timeless book, people - and the reason that I bought it. He lays out the same arguments used today, only in a 1700s context. You can tell that this was one Priest that did a lot of thinking and reading in his spare time.Highly encourage all interested in this topic to buy this book.

This work is one of the most straightforward, brutally honest critiques of religion and it's absurdities, and how authoritarian political figures/powers dupe the masses I have yet to read... and it was authored by a priest of 40 years... around 300 years ago! This book (NOT the edition which Voltaire butchered) should be read by every thinking person in America (or, honestly, the world). I don't have the words to thank Michael Shreve enough for translating Meslier's masterpiece.

Book arrived in "new" condition and I love the book! Have not finished yet but surely will before the week is up!

This book is epic. Published just a short time after his death in 1729 this is the first time we can read the full original work in English, NOT Voltaire's heavily edited version (takes the fun bits out) which is usually called Superstition in All Ages.Ok.... Meslier hates God, all gods, he loves to mock Jesus, to pour contempt on prophets, he hates all Kings and princes BECAUSE they are kings and princes! and the bishops that support their illegitimate rule, their underlings the petty priests, cannons and monks. He dissects prophets who babble nonsense, he exposes massive flaws in the 'holy' bible's authority. I must point out unfortunately the book does mention 4 or 5 times the Jews, how they are a most despised and hated people etc, this is a sad mistake the Author made in an otherwise triumphant shotgun blast to tyranny and oppression.I'll just give some typical chapter headings:4: First proof: Of the vanity and falsity of religions, which are all only human inventions11: Weakness and vanity of the so-called miracles to authorise any truth of religion16: The wisdom and learning contained in the so-called Holy Scriptures are only human18: The miracles reported are unbelievable and the reason why41: Sixth proof: Of the vanity and falsity of the Christian religion, taken from the abuse, the unjust persecutions, and the tyranny of rulers, which it tolerates or authorizes60: Most of the learned and wisest of antiquity denied or doubted the existence of the gods76: There are many false prophets and many false miracles(there are 97 chapters)Some times the method is like a flow chart, other times he gives us his stream of conscientiousness. This book is intellectual & philosophical, it is VERY angry, it is righteous and forceful. Meslier's message must have been loud in the ears of the revolutionaries in France when they put their priests in boats.. and sank the boats >;) but in the book Meslier does generously at ONE point say his readers shouldn't kill priests. Oh boy does Meslier hate priests...He is humourous, he is ruthless, he gives us soap box chapters on animal rights and an entire chapter devoted to monks, begging them to get a proper job.Extremely radical. Height of the Enlightenment. Anti-tyranny, anti-religion, anti-state.

"Good Sense (Le Bon Sens)," published anonymously in 1772, was indeed written by d'Holbach, but it was wrongly attributed to Jean Meslier for many years. It is an entirely different book. The manuscript for "Testament" was discovered among Melier's effects after his death in 1729 (when D'Holbach was six years old), and the various extracts that were subsequently published undoubtedly influenced both d'Holbach and Diderot. An excellent account of this is given in Philipp Blom's book, "A Wicked Company."Meslier was a village priest, very ordinary by most appearances, who dutifully performed his duties to his parish for forty years, and yet all the while he retreated to his study in the evenings to secretly write a remarkable and angry anti-religious screed. It was perhaps the first overtly atheistic book to come out of the Enlightenment, and Meslier knew that to publish it during his lifetime would invite imprisonment and even death. It is a long and often tedious book, but well worth the effort.

As an American girl, marrying an Iraqi man a bit older than myself, in the early 1960's, I saw many degrees of these attitudes and behaviors portrayed in this book. I have to say, despite the battles it took, we had 45 years of relative happiness and a great family. I also enjoyed the familiar Arabic words and things they ate. We all loved the delicious Arabic food my husband made. There are so many great qualities in these people. It's difficult to think that this was and is the way some of them still think!!!! Anyway, thank you, Etaf. P.S. They can be convinced otherwise.

I love reading about other cultures. This book made me feel the main characters. I had so much empathy for these women. I also thought the ending could not have been done any better. Perfect.

I can't imagine living a life of such restriction and abuse. Being a woman in many parts of the world is a liability and a handicap. When did men decide this? When did it become shameful to be a woman? Women were celebrated and revered, idolized in some civilizations. Extremism in any society is dangerous. I give tremendous kudos for this author for shedding light on this belief that women are disposable beings. It's a terrible reality. A reality that should be fought against through education of both men and women in the Islamic/Muslim world. I find light in this author's courage to tell it. I find abundant courage in all women who tell this story.

I absolutely loved this book. It brought so many tears to my eyes. Yes a bit repetitive in the dialogue of the characters. But I thought the author was so brave to speak about the injustices that Arabic women go through. As a woman you can't help but to just sympathize. I personally hated the ending but overall it's a raw, heartfelt beautiful story.

This was a tough read from beginning to end.Be prepared to meet Isra and immediately be introduced to the depressive condition that is her life—written in its raw, unapologetic, and wholly frustrating form.I despised everyone.Everyone.Isra’s mother for her enabling of her daughter’s submissions, Fareeda for her role in keeping Isra in a state of stagnation, Khaled for resigning himself to a role he would come to champion for his useless sons ...just ...ugh!All of them made me want to break stuff.The fact that the book speaks to ideals based within the Arab culture didn’t change my perspective on these characters: I still despised many of them and kept waiting on them to be something more than enablers and abusers.I guess I’m too Westernized to read something like this because I simply couldn’t forgive Isra’s resignation.At all.Again, I understand the book is meant to show how restrictive life for a woman can be within the Arab culture, but a lot of what happens to Isra felt, at times, like willful ignorance/downright stupidity.She couldn’t get out of her own way. It was as if she decided the devil she knew was better than the one she didn’t—no matter the hell she was currently living.The writing itself was great. Rum understood where she wanted to go with the story and each one of her characters.In the end, my issue with this book was accepting a world where women are painfully irrelevant; to the point they’re driven to tragic extremes to find anything resembling true freedom.That was too big of a pill for me to swallow—no matter what truth it’s based in.

And, it’s about that culture’s expectations for women and what can happen when those expectations aren’t met. Most of all, it’s about women struggling to find their own voices within that culture and escaping the culture altogether. Through mother, Isra, and daughter, Deya, we see the very harsh realities of the Palestinian Muslim culture fighting to remain unchanged even after having been transplanted into Brooklyn.“Where I come from, voicelessness is the condition of my gender, as normal as the bosoms on a woman’s chest, as necessary as the next generation growing inside her belly. But we will never tell you this, of course. Where I come from, we’ve learned to conceal our condition. We’ve been taught to silence ourselves, that our silence will save us.”Isra comes to America as a young bride, newly wed to a man she barely knows. Deya, the eldest of her four daughters, was born an American, but experiences none of the freedoms other American women take for granted.“It wasn’t her fault she wasn’t Arab enough. She had lived her entire life straddled between two cultures. She was neither Arab nor American. She belonged nowhere. She didn’t know who she was.”The balance between these two women, the back and forth stories of Isra and Deya were at the heart of A Woman Is No Man. Fareeda was an easy character to dislike, so I appreciated that in Part II of the book, Rum introduced us to Fareeda’s perspective. She upended some of my opinions about Fareeda. It didn’t make me like her much more, but the life she had endured at least made me understand her a little better.“She had known, even before seeing the mournful look on his face, that he would be disappointed. She hadn’t blamed him. The shame of her gender was engraved on her bones.”What Didn’tDevaluing of Women – Though at the heart of the culture and key to the story, the treatment of women in A Woman Is No Man was hard to stomach. Isra regularly suffered physical and mental abuse at the hand of her husband, while everyone else in the family turned a blind eye. The relentless pressure to produce a son and Isra’s dismissal as a person of worth when she did not felt heartless.Isra Herself – Though I felt very sad for Isra, I also grew weary of her long-suffering, self-defeating thoughts. I realize that she was raised to NOT place any value on herself, but her constant helplessness and hopelessness grew too repetitive. I felt like her many insecurities were beat into the story over and over.{The Final Assessment}For the most part I liked A Woman Is No Man very much, especially the first half of the story. By the second half, I’d grown a little tired of all the suffering, and just wanted to get to something more positive happening. Thankfully, that did occur. I started with the part of the book that talks about CO2 to see if it was at least honest about the problem. Regrettably the book is standard climate denial tripe: like almost all the others of its kind it denies that CO2 presents any threat to the planet, instead citing its advantages. This renders completely irrelevant everything it has to say about how our energy sources need to take into account the threat posed by CO2.

As an engineer, the author points out a little known but huge problem with wind and solar energy: it can lead to instability of the power grid. I am an electrical engineer and the gird requires a "real-time control system." Since there is no way to store the large amounts of energy delivered by the grid-- for example, all the batteries in California in cars, solar power plants, etc store only a few minutes of the energy delivered by the grid--the control system needs to match up the power source with the power demand on an instantaneous basis. But wind/solar are inherently non-dispatchable. You get what the wind and sun give you and you cannot increase it when there is demand. This is from an article in the Los Angeles Times (no climate change deniers they) "In a sprawling complex of laboratories and futuristic gadgets in Golden, Colo., a supercomputer named Peregrine does a quadrillion calculations per second to help scientists figure out how to keep the lights on. Peregrine was turned on this year by the U.S. Energy Department. It has the world's largest "petascale" computing capability. It is the size of a Mack truck. Its job is to figure out how to cope with a risk from something the public generally thinks of as benign — renewable energy. Energy officials worry a lot these days about the stability of the massive patchwork of wires, substations and algorithms that keeps electricity flowing. They rattle off several scenarios that could lead to a collapse of the power grid — a well-executed cyberattack, a freak storm, sabotage. But as states, led by California, race to bring more wind, solar and geothermal power online, those and other forms of alternative energy have become a new source of anxiety. One reviewer stated that this book was preaching to the choir. That couldn’t be more true. What was billed as an economic review about the high cost of wind was nothing more than preaching. Why is it necessary to question the motives of anyone that disagrees with your opinions? The author continually used name calling and assumptions of conflicts of interest to shoot down the arguments of those who have expressed a different view. This led to those critical of this book to question his motives, as seen from the negative reviews.What was reported to be a critical economic analysis was a collection of cherry picked “facts” that added up to the conclusion that was obviously the starting point. If someone really wants to get the true relative costs of wind, this is not the place. My recommendation is that person should download from the internet the USeia study from 2017 on the levelized costs of electricity generation. That doesn’t cost anything and is free of bias, which this analysis is not.From the point of view of those convinced already that wind is not the way to go, this book reinforced those views, but those people already believe, so why bother to spend money to get someone to agree. For those convinced that renewable energy is a good thing, this book will do nothing to dissuade them. For those who want some factual review before making up their mind, there are better sources - such as the USeia analysis.This book is a waste. It has added nothing of value to the debate.

The book makes very clear that the cost for wind and solar is not the end of the problem. Our politicians tell only a small part of the story and probably do not know enough to really solve the problem.You require a continuous stand by of gas turbine plants with capability of very fast start, which will basically double the cost of power supply to the industry and the Citizens .They are now building 50 M-watt test installation in La Porte Texas where the CO2 is collected at a much higher pressure and cost are going to be minimal for this effort. Contrary to when you collect flue gas from a conventional plant and clean the CO2 out.Which takes around 15% of the produced power It is also my opinion that there are many industrial applications for super-critical CO2 for selective extraction of many products in the industrie.In my vision CO2 will be a very valuable product in the future for the industrial development, and not some thing you have to get rid of.

The author clearly explains why wind and solar energy are not the answer to our energy challenges.As a tree farmer, I welcome carbon dioxide, supposedly one of the evils that must be stopped, because trees and all plants absorb it to grow and then release oxygen.Read this book and learn the truth. Only supporting wind and solar endorses the very high govenment subsidies required to build these facilitites.Wind and solar energy are not reliable, only supplemental. Worse yet, as the author explains, they are generally detrimental to a reliable electric grid.If the climate change, or whatever hysterical term is in vogue, forces prevail, be prepared to suffer the consequences - electricity only when the wind is blowing or the sun is shining. Then we're all going to be in the dark!

Imagine trying to research late 20th century fashion with nothing but Vogue magazine as a reference. Naturally you would assume that everyone had a BMI of 14%, bizarre hair was the rage, visible hard nipples were just part of the fashion, and we were all running around in the snow like suicidal mantis bugs with lipstick smeared halfway up our cheeks and nothing but the most outre $5000 tank tops money could buy.This is effectively how we are presented with Victorian fashion. Illustrated high style fashion magazines like La Mode Illustree have become our "references" while relatively rarely do we see realistic depictions of the actual fashions of the time, and so illustrated example models of idealized bodies wearing idealized fashions become the assumed norm.This book is about the best remedy for that short of a trip in a time machine. 235 photographs spanning the period from the introduction of the photograph in 1839 to the years leading up to WWI with heavy annotation present a fairly realistic overall picture of what a fashionable person of each age would be swishing about town in. The main focus is England though there are a few references to other countries (primarily France), and while there are references to the clothing of people of lesser means, this is primarily an investigation of those who had enough money to actually keep up with the fashions of the time.Don't let the page count fool you, what this book lacks in size it makes up for in information density. Descriptions of fashions from both modern points of view and period text references are cross referenced with the included photographs and give a pretty complete picture of each trend and clothing item described. There is a fair amount of men's fashion described as well, which is pretty darn rare in Victorian references. My only issue with this book is the relative difficulty of following the photographic references as they are grouped together in four large clumps distributed throughout the book. The photographs are numbered sequentially but the photographic sections do not have page numbers, so finding the photographs referred to in a single sentence can take you flipping through half of the book. Given that there are in text references every 50 words or so this gets old extremely quickly, but even so it was worth the effort.I expect this to become a go-to reference for Victorian clothing and it is highly recommended as such for those with more then a passing interest in Victorian and Edwardian fashion, though I will likely add some tabs to the photograph sections to make it easier to find the referenced images and I suggest doing the same.

The pictures are fascinating, but the text is not. You can't read more than one sentence without falling asleep. You need to have a solid background in historical fashion terminology, or it isn't going to make much sense even if you can stay awake

Descriptive and enjoyable to read. I just wish I didn't have to turn the book so many times. If this book is ever republished, then all the pages (with photographs) that need to be turned sideways should be put together.

It is more a textbook than anything else, a lot of technical information. The format did not please me, you have to go back and forth to see the photos and compare with the text. Ok.

Good quality photos,more than adequate amount of text. If it's for your collection of period fashion books-I'd recommend a "Good" quality used version,rather than buying new. Still-it's invaluable for those interested in this era.

I was expecting bigger photographs and I guess I expected them to be in color. But I get that that is not realistic, given the time period. I confess, I have not read the whole book yet. But I've heard it is very informative.

I have only skim read this book so far, but I was instantly hooked by the over 200 B&W photos of men and women of the time period covered in this wonderful reference book. It provides a window, through photography, into a time long past, the fashions, styles and events and of course the clothes they wore. Each photograph is referenced with loving detail as to what each subject is wearing, doing and who they are - in itself an eminently useful historical reference, but with the addition of the photos it brings them all to vivid life despite the lack of colour. From a writers perspective this is a terrific reference volume and I look forward to reading it more in detail as well as wallowing in the fascinating photos that give the words life.

This book has fascinating pictures that are hard to find elsewhere. The pictures combine with the text to give the reader a real understanding of the kinds of dress women wore at this time. The author also walks us through each decade so we are able to follow along as fashions change.A must for anyone writing about this time frame or just interested in what people really wore.

A well written true story of beautiful little girl taken into an adult world of hell and abuse.

Sabine Dardenne's story of her abduction and imprisonment is chilling, but not particularly well written. We do get a clear picture of the very strong, hard-headed and willful heroine/author. This is a particularly interesting account when read along with the stories of the interactions of Jaycee Lee Dugard and Elizabeth Smart (also survivors) with their captors.

Hard-hitting first account of a child and her suffering under a monstrous captor; a predator; a coward. Learned more about Belgium and the White March. Historical.

Sabine was able to share her story in a powerful way without detailing the gruesome details. I think a bit was also lost in translation, but still a very good read.

Had wanted to read this book for years and tried to order it a few years back but it got lost in the mail, so glad I could finally read this. Such a tragic but inspiring story.

The author was succinct in describing events but the book was still a good read and shed much light on the events that took place. However the narration was a bit disconnected and void of emotion.

Loved it.

If you are starting to paint glass for the first time, this book explains the basics of glass painting with a brush (there are also other ways to decorate glass). It gives a good overview of the supplies needed and teaches you how to load the brush and how to do the strokes to create really pretty leaves, flowers, vines, etc. There are patterns for each project and detailed directions. There are a variety of projects, so if you don't want to exactly replicate the project in the book, you'll get ideas to customize your needs by using different colors and glass types. As for the paints, the author states to use Enamel paints on glass, but I received great results using Marta Stewart's "All Purpose" paints. You'll either have to cure for 21 days, or 'bake it' (directions are on Martha's website). One piece of advice for beginners (like I am), is that it takes PRACTICE! I got discouraged at first and thought, "What the heck did I get myself into!" But I just kept experimenting and practicing, and with each try I find I'm getting better. I had an extra glass shelf from my china cabinet and practice on that, so I would recommend using something similar. I can wash off the paint and keep using the glass over and over again for practice (as the paint hasn't cured yet).

This is a wonderful book full of beautiful color photos of designs to paint on glass and china. The recommended paint is the easy to obtain Plaid, Folkart Enamel, and the style appears almost identical to Dewberry's One-Stroke-painting, which is easy to learn. The project patterns can be photocopied and made larger or smaller, depending on the size of the painting surface. Patterns for curved surfaces have cutting lines on them to allow the pattern to lie flat against the surface of rounded glass or china. This is one book I am very happy to have.

This book is full of absolutely beautiful ideas & painted glass objects. Elegantly done with step by step instructions! I have been painting for a while, but I am new to glass painting, & I'm still learning to use the medium correctly. This book is wonderful! I recommend it highly. Not for beginners.

When I first heard about this book, I wondered how it came to be. "Dear Pope Francis" started when children sent questions to the Pope. The team at Loyola Press gathered these letters and asked Pope Francis if they could share his answers. Fr. Antonio Spadaro met with the Pope and this book shares the story of their meeting as well as the results.Pope Francis was intrigued by the questions along with drawings. He states, "But these are tough questions". The questions these children ask are varied and some are very difficult. The questions are interesting: "What did God do before the world was made?", "Will my grandpa, a non-Catholic who is not a person willing to do something evil, go to heaven.....?", When you were a child did you like dancing?", "Why do you need that tall hat?"I have to admit that this book left me in tears. The questions are so touching and the answers are so beautiful. The questions are in the children's' handwriting and are accompanied by drawings by the children and pictures of the children.I bought this for our parish library. It is a book for children, but I think adults should read it too.

A beautiful, larger book with full-page illustrations, including photos of the children around the world who were chosen to write questions to Pope Francis. The letters they wrote are reproduced beautifully on the pages. The questions they ask are universal among children everywhere. A wonderful book for a child or an adult. I gave it to my mother, age 94, and she loved it!

This is a beautiful book with letters from children all around the world with their questions for Pope Francis about God and Religion. I enjoyed reading this book with my children, it is so clear from Pope Francis' responses how dearly he lives and understands children. I love how easily he relates to them. I feel bad for taking off one star but feel I have to. One of the responses the Pope gives to a letter from a child asking about if non believers still go to heaven, his Holiness brings up suicide. I was not prepared at bedtime reading to have to explain the concept of suicide to my young children and had I known ahead of time would have skipped that page. My hope in writing this review is not to dissuade others from purchasing it for their children, but rather as a warning so you are not unprepared when reading it with your kids.

I purchased this book for my inquisitive son for his 1st Communion. He is 8 years old. We love seeing the children's written letters and their drawings. It was also neat to see a photo of each child and where they are from. This was a good book with many wonderful answers. I think everyone should read it. (adults included)

This is such a special book. I bought one for 2 of my grandchildren families for Easter. The questions are so pure and innocent and the Pope's answers are too. He gives a deeper answer when necessary and makes astute observations about the children's drawings. Loved it!

I purchased one for my 8-year old God-daughter's First Holy Communion. My 12-year old daughter perused it and loved it SO much I needed to purchase one for her as well as an Easter gift. The letters are posted in each child's original penned hand and language, translated into English for the book then followed by the Pope's answer. If the child drew/colored pictures with their letter, those were included as well. The book is a delightful read and great conversation starter about other children in the world and how they live or deal with their lives. I highly recommend this book.

First, a warning, this is my first review of a book. There are bound to be spelling errors, grammar issues and other such nonsense but I'm going to give it a go none-the-less.I've been a fan of Mike Loades since finding his Weapons That Made Britain series. I've been sick and tired of seeing videos, movies, TV and other such media talking pure bunk about the weapons, armour and people of the past. Mike took time to actually do REAL research, to learn, to experiment and do as much as possible to recreate even a little piece of the past which taught me quite a few things I simply didn't know.And that's exactly what this book did as well. I've always been focused on 1350-1430 or so in the European Martial Arts, and 1500-1650 in the Japanese Marital Arts world, so this book, opened up a whole new number of worlds for me, one where the sword was pivotal to survival, to countries, to wealth. And that says a lot right there.The ability for Mike to really put aside all the stuff we THINK we knew about how swords were used and more importantly show us WHY they were used is simply invaluable to anyone who has even a passing interest in the history of not just the blade, but the man (or woman) behind the blade.I spend most of my summer inside a suit of early 15th century armour, helping correct some of horrible things media has done in its view of the sword and armour, and Mike's book is yet another treasure trove of information I can use to better educate not just my students, but people with only a passing interest in the sword.The book is well written, laid out in a chronological order, so the development of the sword, from its axe-like proto-history, to the cutlasses and sabers of the more modern era are all clear, concise and contain concrete examples of the people that used them. The illustrations and photographs are very well done, and do not distract the reader.Well done Mike, well done.

Even fiction and fantasy include mythical swords for their characters, such as Glamdring, the sword of the wizard Gandalf from the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien.The personable Mike Loades displays authority on things military on many historical television programmes, yet for those wanting more, this book is a great start for in-depth inquiry. Mr. Loades' passion comes through in his television appearances, but also in his book."Swords and Swordsmen" takes the reader on a journey of the sword, mankind's legendary weapon of mayhem against his fellow man. After all, a sword is a weapon designed to inflict bodily harm. Yet what a marvelous legacy and history are found herein!One learns about the first sword from ancient times and into the 20th century. There were swords for many purposes, such as combat, dress, cavalry, dueling, sparring and beheadings. No stone is left unturned by Mr. Loades...even one with a sword in it. They're all here, from the glaive to the rapier. There is even a small mention of women duelists--courtesans, actually--fighting for their own definition of honour.Mr. Loades is thorough in his look at all facets of the sword. The manufacture and artistic qualities of swordsmithing are discussed. The American jeweller Tiffany and Company made a bespoke sword for a famous historical military figure, but you will have to read the book to discover his identity.There are many excellent photographs and illustrations from history.Many special swords are featured, as well as the personages associated with them: king and emperors, army officers and duelists.All in all, this is a fascinating, engaging and informative read. Highly recommended to all who are interested in the sword and historical weaponry.
