This guidebook gave us an excellent overview of the key highlights. The presentation is uncluttered and simple. I'm writing this review many years later, but as I recall the maps were excellent and my husband and I used this throughout our whole trip. We did also purchase other guides to take along but this one was by far our favorite. Indeed it's surface level so if you like detail in a guidebook compliment it with another. I would give it more stars if I could. Prior to going there I immersed myself a bit in the history and I greatly enjoyed The Great Siege by Ernle Bradford. My friend said that he found it a little too textbook-y, but I thought that it was gripping once you know the characters. Malta is full of history. It's relatively short and it brought some of the forts to life for me as I could see the action unfolding from the book. Be sure also to visit a small fishing village, with the colorful striped boats and fish fresh out of the water to your plate. We had a European hake in Marsaxloxx and it was one of the best dishes I've ever had the pleasure to enjoy. We went to Peter's Pool nearby and we had the whole place to ourselves and it was beautiful and incredibly romantic. Finally, if you dive the diving here on a good day is world class. Incredible 100 foot + vis. and huge banks of silvery fish swimming about the underwater caves.

I've been trying to teach myself a little about tintyping and wet/dry plate photography as well as some of the various form of print making and decided this book might be of some help. It is of help but left me wanting more information on just about everything I ran across. I found nothing about lens/ camera selection would be one example of the book's shortcomings.You will find samples of the many processes described, tips, material lists and some instructions on their use, maybe enough history and information about a subject to determine whether or not you need to continue your search for information on a subject that catches your interest. You will find yourself wanting to look in the extensive bibliography for some of the other books that are often quoted in Enfield's text. The sources and website section will also prove to be of value- I'm no expert but I recognized some of the names listed, be sure to read it.I did like the sections on "dry" tintyping, platinum and palladium prints.By no means complete, this book is a good "starting" guide to alternative photography. I'm not sure if Enfield's second book, I have both, "Jill Enfield's Guide to Photographic Alternative Processes" is of any greater value than this book.

When I became 'caught up' in this book, and began to enjoy the succinct and down to earth advice about alternative techniques and processes, it was hard for me to stop reading this quite lengthy and detailed exposé . Certainly not offered as a cold hard facts technical 'bible', author and skilled teacher Jill Enfield has written a friendly, easy to read, interesting, informative and dare I say seductive book. Certainly, there are plenty of cold hard facts, but more importantly, Ms Enfield has set it all out in such an easy to read style and a 'anyone can do it' fashion, that you will be wanting to start many of these techniques TODAY ! I have other excellent books about alternative processes, and some (even the 'standards' for the genre) are just a little too scientific for me. I think Jill Enfield got it right. If you are looking for a user friendly, 'golly gee', 'I can do that' recipe book that is easy to read, with easy to follow instructions, and best of all, a book that helps you to get some nice results very quickly, then this is the book for you. (PS. I first got this book from my library, then got a loan time extension, then handed it back, then realized I HAD to have my own copy. Save yourself some time and trouble ... get your copy from the get go).

I have to admit I was very disappointed in this book. Maybe it's my fault. I thought the book would be in depth about the processes covered. Not really. In my opinion, it just covers the minimal basics and not much more.If you are looking to understand these processes and how they work it's going to inform you. If you are looking to actually learn to perform the processes, it's not going to give you what you want.

I've seen Jill Enfield's work frequently in magazines and books, and was thrilled when I found out she was writing her own text. I teach experimental photography at a university, so any book of this nature that comes on the market, I buy. When this came in the mail from Amazon.com (promptly, I might add) I was impressed. Watson Guptill knows how to lay out a textbook so that it appeals to the reader, and is well supported by images, not only with examples of the processes but with "how to" pictures, also. It is user friendly, especially for those who are somewhat newer to the photographic medium and experimental in nature. That said, I learned new things (e.g. the chapter on tintypes) that I will use in my experimental photography class! These topics are included: black and white infrared, liquid emulsion, enlarging negatives for alternative processes, ink jet transfers, polaroid processes, cyanotypes, kallitypes, platinum printing, palladium printing, tintypes, hand coloring, and other stuff. It is a good combination of what are traditionally termed "alt process" (platinum, cyanotypes, etc.) and what are more experimental things to try. For this type of book the price at Amazon.com is excellent--most books of this caliber range from [$$$].

Ms. Enfield's book is clearly written. She presents in clearly detailed steps processes which other authors make frightening or inaccessible. this is a superb sourcebook for alternative processes!

I was looking for information on paper sizing for inkjet printing. I not only found it but also found a plethora of other related pieces of information that prompted me to other and unforeseen venues.
