FINALLY! A diet book from an author who knows what she's talking about! I already incorporate a lot of these tips and I'm losing 3 to 6 pounds a week. Not sure why the fluctuation, since the diet and exercise are the same each week, but oh, well. I'm happy.Add Fennel Seed to the metabolism boosting spices. and change "cold water" to "ice water". Even in winter. The only negative is that she pushes grains as part of the metabolism boosting diet. We don't need them. It's the grains that made us fat in the first place, and they actually SLOW metabolism. The food pyramid needs to be turned upside down. And my doctor agrees! I went in today, and she had taken a marker and put a big black X through the "grains" section on the plate showing portion sizes. LOLI am basically eating a high protein, near zero-carb diet, and just got my complete panel blood work results. "keep doing whatever it is you're doing" was what the doctor said. And this book pretty much is following what I'm doing (sans grains)The author does get a few things confused though... like hyperthyroidism vs hypothyroidism. A common error that often gets perpetuated when an author doesn't understand the Greek and Latin root words. I automatically transposed these in my own head...because I have a friend who has a HYPOthyroid...(underactive) rather than a HYPERthyroid (overactive).

"Boost Your Metabolism Now: Lose Weight Naturally and Look and Feel Great!" by Gabriel Kennedy is a nonfiction, self-help, health book that tells you everything you need to know about how a metabolism works, how to increase your metabolism, and how to maintain a higher metabolism. This is an invaluable tool for the average person who is looking for natural ways to increase their metabolism and lose weight. The book promotes weightlifting as the best means of exercise for speeding up your metabolic rate, and protein as the best metabolism-boosting food group. There are many topics in this book; some of them are: calories, fat burning, making small changes, natural weight loss, real food, basal metabolic rate, raising your BMR, factors that affect metabolism, small meals, blood sugar levels, nine different methods to boost your metabolism, foods to avoid, foods that help, vitamins and minerals, and exercise. Also included is a shopping list and recipes. This book has it all. If you need any help with speeding up your metabolism, you should check out this book, because it covers everything in a concise format. I recommend this book.

I was a bit disappointed about a few things. While it was an overall helpful resource, there were a few major inconsistencies.First off, hyperthyroidism is NOT the term for an underactive thyroid. It's an overactive thyroid (hence the word "hyper"). Hypothyroidism is the term for an underactive thyroid. Also, it was mentioned that you lose calories by eating cantaloupe. Where did you get this research? That is (sadly) untrue! On the other hand, you do actually lose calories by eating & digesting celery, a fact that was missing from that specific section.I wish the author went a bit more in depth on artificial sweeteners. I'm unsure of the publish date, but there has been more research recently as to the negative effect on metabolism and weight loss (and not to mention current research indicating Splenda [regarded as the safest one out] causes leukemia, DNA damage and kills essential bacteria in the intestines. I believe all studies were done with high concentrations in lab mice, but it's something to consider when no long-term human research has been done.).Overall, I did find some helpful information, and with the changing of the major problems I mentioned above, I'd definitely raise my rating a star or two.

I actually flew through this book today, it was that good.I stopped once, at the BMR calculator page, and went to calculator.net where I learned I need about 1900 calories a day for my resting calorie burn, and with my current exercise I should lose maybe 2 pounds/week if I eat 1500 calories/day.I can do that! Especially in 6 smaller meals/day using yummy well-chosen and diverse foods. I've been feeling guilty if I eat that much, but it dawned on me the wisdom of this plan. It matches my body which so easily goes into famine mode if I eat too few calories. Then at around 80% of the book, there's a bunch of recipes. A bonus for me! They are for the most part different than healthy recipes I have seen in so many other places, and so simple to do.So I can set my Kindle to 80% or 85% of this book and easily find the recipes again.Good book!

I love it. I use it to improve my self and my entourage. Verry good service and quality of the seller.

This ebook provided very useful and beneficial information to aid in weight loss. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to lose weight and gain healthy knowledge pertaining to weight loss.

This book is full of information on how to boost your metabolism now. Not only does it explain about BMR, but also the author tells you what to do to boost your metabolism naturally, like when to eat and what to eat. He also talks about sleep and exercise. To top it up the book has some recipes of healthy juices, smoothies and others. If you are concerned about your body weight, this book has great advice to follow.

This book has helped me understand metabolism and the mechanics of losing weight. It's a great companion to my current exercise program and I found the juicing recipes to be useful as well. Thanks for a great guide!

Wormwood Forest: A Natural History of Chernobyl, by Mary Mycio

From Publishers Weekly

Mycio takes us on a timely tour of the eerie, surprisingly vigorous area around the Chernobyl nuclear disaster that's too radioactive for safe human habitation, yet where, 20 years after the explosion, flora and fauna are "thriving." Among abandoned towns, thousands of cormorants nest, and Przewalskis, a breed of wild horse, live seemingly unharmed on irradiated grass. A few people remain: workers decommissioning the plant, bureaucrats and scientists struggling with chronic underfunding, and samosels, elderly squatters so homesick that Ukraine finally let them stay. Mycio, former Kiev correspondent for the L.A. Times, is a good guide, clearly conveying the niceties of radionuclides; the elaborate, jerry-built structures containing the worst of the radiation; and the impossibility of cleaning the place up. She finds occasional humor and plenty of astonishment, as when a herd of red deer cross her path: "My recorder preserved my inarticulate reaction: 'Super. Wow. My God, they're beautiful!' " Mycio gives plenty of fuel for the discussion of nuclear power as an alternative to fossil fuel. Not all readers will share her cautious optimism, yet her verdict, that Chernobyl is not simply a disaster but a terrible paradox, is convincing. B&w photos, map. The author takes us through a courageous trip around several contaminated villages in Ukraine and Belarus. She meets interesting people who stayed in the contaminated places willingly or by lack of alternatives. All these names of contaminated villages now linger in my mind. However it seems to me that she disposed only of a simple gamma radiation meter. By not measuring the alpha and beta radiation you get the impression that the radiation is not so bad after all which is not true in reality. No wonder that she got full cooperation of the authorities who drove her around in military off-road vehicles,But still an interesting read

This book is by far the best over view of the situation in the Chernobyl exclusion zone I have read. The author has taken great pains to review and explain the environmental impact in many different parts of the exclusion zone and has interacted with many of the residents as well as scientists who live and work in the zone. The book will give anyone with an open mind the opportunity to learn the truth about the disaster and its lasting effects instead of just the hype pushed by advocates for or against nuclear energy and environmental issues. This book is extensively foot noted so that the interested reader can look up and verify the accuracy and completeness of the information given, but it is also written from a very personal basis, often reading like a travelogue of some daring explorer entering hazardous territory to learn what might be there. Highly recommended for young teen age readers up to the elderly.

Mary Mycio is a 2nd generation American-Ukrainian. The disaster at Chernobyl hit her family harder than most because of their links to the region. Ms. Mycio made dozens of trips to the disaster site over a period of several years in her effort to learn both the scale of the disaster and the miraculous recovery of the natural lands around it.In addition to a wealth of facts and figures, the book is loaded with personal anecdotes and as a result, Ms. Mycio's constant sense of amazement and underlying anxiety over radiation exposure adds a very human element to what could easily have become a dry academic treatise. Her account of the explosive recovery of the natural environment inside the Chernobyl exclusion zone covers all the most important scientific developments and research on the recovery interspersed with very human tales of the people who work there full time and those who have returned to live in the midst of radiation that is certain to shorten their natural lifespans.Nature, it turns out, thrives in radioactive zones where long-term exposure is fatal to humans.

Mary Mycio keeps returning to this great irony: Out of the worst man-caused disaster of the 20th century springs a stunning natural ecosystem. Mary knows Chernobyl like few others. She has spent a significant portion of her life studying the accident and its aftermath. She has spent many days tromping through the woods in the Exclusion Zone. Her writing is fluid and never bombastic. A readable, interesting book hands you the chance to understand Chernobyl, and catch a glimpse of the awesome recuperative powers of nature.

Interesting book, but it is very technical and describes in detail (and in many pages) the science of radioactive decay. I was hoping it would be more about the flora and fauna that has survived and flourished since the Chernobyl incident and there is some of that, but not enough to suit me.

A unique, fascinating, and often entertaining look at the Chernobyl exclusion zone. The author beings a perspective not often heard or even considered in discussion of the topic, and one that is SO very important to it.

Deep and astonishing account of Chernobyl.

One reading of this will not satisfy you if you are intrigued with Chernobyl and the Zone of Alienation. I'm half way through the second time and find myself enjoying it more than the first. I would really love to take a personal tour of the place to see it for myself.
