Very well written account of the migrating caribou. The calving grounds are in the Arctic Wildlife National Refuge. The book and the message is as important now as when it was written. While Canada has protection for caribou - in Yukon, Ivvavik NP but hunting is allowed on the US side. With the proposed opening to oil and gas exploration under the current administration the caribou are in major danger of being the victims as their calving grounds will be right where the drilling will take place - and this could well be the end for them. Read the book and become an activist for preserving wilderness.
I couldn't put this book down! Whether it was descriptions of skiing or hiking through harsh arctic landscapes, grassroots criticisms of the oil industry, or stories of a few too many grizzly encounters, this book kept me hooked. I confess myself to be a picky reader, and this book passed the test. It has pretty much everything you want from good nature writing: philosophy, adventure, and a strong, well-crafted message.
Enlightening story. i will never think of the far north in the same way again. beautiful descriptions actually make me want to go there. The complex clash between modern influence and traditional lifestyles brings me to tears. Warning, this book can be very sad.
This is a truly fascinating tale of a husband and wife living in conditions most of us can't begin to even imagine. I will definitely be reading it again. And again.

An interesting and readable book on the artic caribou. It would be nice to have a year or several years of observations to see the whole picture.
Great writing about an unusual trip, camping out while traveling with migratory caribou in the Artic. This husband/wife team come frightingly close to grizzlies, not to mention finding themsleves surrounded by the caribou themselves. I hated to end the book; I had come to feel myself along for the trip.
Timely given climate change and politics of the day, and yet wonderfully personal...great read.
