Donald Trump is mentioned no less than a dozen times in the first chapter, always in a negative light, while the authors sing the praises of leftists like Rahm Emanuel and others. Localism requires a moderate & nonpartisan perspective, unless you live in a very large city like the authors. This book is written for people at the far left end of the spectrum who are disenfranchised with primarily Republicans, and secondarily Democrats who cannot win elections. It is shocking how many times the authors point to the 2016 elections as the need for driving power back to the cities (read: we lost the election, so let's move power to the Blue bastions). The authors state in chapter one that they will provide "clear relevance for rural areas." What they demonstrate is East Coast, big-city myopic sour-grapes disapprobation.I appreciate the author's stated desire for pragmatism, but what is pragmatic in a city of millions is often unwise in a city of 10,000. For us in small cities and towns, we've not experienced a catastrophic loss in (misplaced) hope in our federal leaders, resulting in a sudden desire to move power to a local level. We've always focused locally, regardless of whether a D or R occupied the Oval Office. I was hoping this book would help me to lead better within my small city, but I will probably use it as overpriced fire starter. In summary, If you live in NYC, Philly, Baltimore, etc., you might enjoy this read. For most Americans, this book does very little to help us grow local economies, develop better social services, or navigate & improve local governmental structures.-Disappointed Small City Moderate

A beautiful and timely book - clear, visionary, and action-oriented!I see Bruce and Jeremy’s book as an inspiration for a long overdue Regional Plan for Metropolitan Washington. The new localism ideas and policies, set in a regional context, could benefit this fascinating region, with lots of "hidden assets". The authors rightfully emphasize the critical issue of metropolitan governance – where government fragmentation works against handling the land use issue regionally. The regional plan could apply some of Jeremy's concepts about metropolitan finance, and inject some real problem-solving and a real action plan in it, not just principles, ideas, and blueprints. The book’s arguments are well buttressed by carefully selected case studies, which illustrate the power of leadership, public-private partnerships, and decisive intentionality and action. I particularly appreciated the Copenhagen smart public-private partnership case study from a country worth getting inspired from. Copenhagen PPP model could inspire a long-term solution to Washington Metrorail funding, along with Japan’s rail/metro example of a PPP transit authority that not only does not rely on any government subsidies, it turns a profit as well.Chapter TEN – Toward a Nation of Problem-Solvers, of The New Localism is one of my favorites, with its arguments for leaders and leadership, problem-solving and call to action. We need schools and programs for generalists, urban problem-solvers and leaders, and I have no doubt that Bruce’s affiliation with the London School of Economics Cities international education program, and his European experience can make a significant difference in the circuitous trajectory of ideas, and can make a key contribution to a comprehensive, real world, networked and hands-on, project-based curriculum for urban problem-solvers and leaders.Inspired ideas? Shared ideas? Recycled ideas? No doubt. And hopefully so. After all, what’s the whole idea about ideas? The best a great scholar can do is to be inspired by ideas, select ideas, process and augment them, add more ideas and turn them into a coherent, original, dynamic and inspiring whole, with a vision, a strategy and a call to action. And Bruce is guilty of working with ideas for decades, and of producing seminal books (editor of Reflections on Regionalism, and co-author of The Metropolitan Revolution, with Jennifer Bradley of the Aspen Institute).Congratulations, Bruce and Jeremy, for this beautiful and timely book! Urban and regional planners and colleagues, I encourage you to keep this book on you when you approach the tough problems of the profession!Mircea Enache, Ph.D.

A great and fresh take on life of cities and the role we each play in creating the civic leadership to make them succeed. Three particular points that stick for ma and motivate me - 1) the day we can wait for fed or state government to come in is gone. There is no Calvary. WE are the Calvary. 2) the public $ available is nothing relative to the private assets that could make change, 3) come together to decide, not just to discuss. Read the book but find the authors on tour or on podcasts too as they are an animated combo with decades of experience to share.

Great book! This book effectively presents the new community development strategies being used around the world to combat a host of pressing issues. It isn’t the most eloquent narrative, but it’s interesting and to-the-point. Any browny points lost for eloquence are made up by its utility. I am simultaneously reading other books on similar topics and actually put one of them aside because it wasn’t saying anything new. That is not the case here. This book says a lot and shares insightful case studies.

This book makes the profound and important connection between growing polarization, driven in part by a broken, unequal economic model and the promise of local solutions. Even the most vociferous, ideologues, ranting at each other and reverting to tribalism, love their families and their communities. This book makes the case for embracing private sector management to deliver public sector benefits with a number of thoughtful case study. It serves as a practical manifesto for a more hopeful world.

Great book for those interested in local and metro cities stepping up to the plate to solve today’s problems. A look at how the federal government will be marginalized financially with social safety net onbligations and defense spending, leaving local governments to solve everything else.

The book proposes a new order and model for addressing grand public challenges at the local level.Broadening the definition of a city from government to a network of public, private and civic actors leads to hybrid solutions and hybrid government. Problem analysis is replaced by problem solving.Great read.

I liked this textbook a lot - and I hate reading and textbooks. It was easy to follow and understand. The content is updated enough where they tie in current events as recent as the 2016 election. There's also a good range of material that concerns everyday citizens and student journalists out there. Of course, let's not forget the communications/PR fellas. It was just an overall user-friendly book compared to the lame-old law books with cases and a bunch of courtroom jargon. This really helped me understand laws that apply to me as a journalist and I learned so much from it!

One of the best school books I've ever had. I still reference it and reread it months after graduating college. :)

Ok

well written and up to date

Seriously, It's a textbook...

Great product.

Informative, dense but full legal examples, study terms are in blue or large titles of sections.Good layout.

Review

Praise for the Previous Edition:"Impressive and deftly written....An example or two cannot do justice to the variety of materials and ideas the author draws together to explain how women workers have functioned as a low-paid reserve force, and why, as wage work became the rule rather than the exception in the 20th century, they found themselves in marginal jobs stereotyped as feminine."--The New York Times Book Review"Comprehensive and packed with information."--St. Louis Post-Dispatch"Without a doubt the single best survey of transformation of women's paid and unpaid work from the colonial period to the present."--American Historical Review

I've been reading US women's history for a couple of years now, working on background for a novel, and I have seen nothing thatmatches this book for careful, detailed exposition of the role ofwomen in the workplace. I'm most familiar with the period from1880 to 1910, and Kessler-Harris covers that era thoroughly andconvincingly. Reading about the earlier years, though, has greatlyincreased my understanding of the period I've been studying.Kessler-Harris shows how paternalistic beliefs about "woman'splace," and views of women as weak and basically stupid, have fromthe beginning deeply influenced the lives of women of all classes, butshe also shows how even the development of new machinery infactories was shaped by the needs of employers to find cheapworkers--who were, of course, women.I wish women would read this book. Talk aboutconsciousness-raising!Having done a good deal of historical research with primary sources, on other subjects and in other periods, I know Kessler-Harris has been thorough and conscientious. She also writes very well. I'm going to buy the new edition, because whatever she has to say will be fascinating.

I read this for class. It was full of all of the information I needed for my report in women's studies, but I did not find the author's voice to be particularly engaging.

all good

Great transaction. Will use again.

This excellent book describes how women have always worked in what is today the USA. Well written with good examples it tells the story of how women moved from working primarily at home industries through early factory days (and how factories were made acceptable and then degraded into sweat shops and worse). It continues the story through the 19th and 20th centuries, discussing how often public perceptions and rhetoric conflicted with actual work practices. I am very glad it is out in a new edition and that a new generation will have easy access to it.
