What if, what if... This story broke my heart. One thing out of many I took away from this is the incessant blame one gets when they claim something happened to them, or in the case of the camping trip.... sure they went on Federal Land, and that’s a side debate for later, but the action by the Air Force afterwards was completely unwarranted- they treated him like a suspected terrorist. When we think of crack pots it’s easy to single people out like Mr. Lovelace because their story doesn’t fit our own perfect interpretation of “how things should be”, but sometimes the truth is the men and women who claim to govern us, and who “knows what’s best” are the real crackpots. With so much evidence that transcends millennia, why is it so easily dismissed? Sometimes our enemies are the ones who keep telling us to “go to bed” , “your government is in control”. It’s BS, no one is in control, we are marooned on a blue space rock with no hope. Take care of each other people, and try to listen to one another. It’s all we have. Thanks Mr. Lovelace, I would sure like to punch Brad in the face, but he’s probably dead and being churned into worm food by now. Take care.

Incident At Devils Den was simply riveting!Mr. Lovelace articulately conveys his personal experiences and innermost feelings regarding his vast and rich history of extraordinary events.Documentation and preservation of evidence is part and parcel to any serious investigation. The immense treasure trove of evidence made available to the public is truly compelling. The heartfelt dedication and determination required to write a book of this nature is evident, especially when the author was advised to remain silent. With much gratitude, wishing you the health and strength to continue to share your work.

The events described in this book make it clear (to me) why disclosure would not be in the works anytime soon. While I believe people would be accepting of benevolent visitors, there would be pure terror if this scenario were found to be true.I have mixed feelings. My desire to have proof of extraterrestrial visitors is outweighed by a hope that they would not be as described in this book. If so....what are we but mere lab creatures being experimented on?A great read. I would recommend.

This is an intense story of one person’s lifelong experiences with aliens. Each reader will form his/her own opinion on whether Lovelace is telling fact or fiction. Interestingly, this book focuses equally on the reactions of his family, friends, and the military, and how he responded. This is a book about American culture as well as a memoir.Lovelace has a natural narrative ability. I cringed when I read how his parents and sisters reacted when he was a boy telling them about the spaceship. Granted, their reactions were likely typical for that era and for our society at that time. Still, I cringed. He went to law school and rose in his profession to eventually become an attorney general. He married, raised a family. Only after retirement at the age of 64, has he come forward. Given the skepticism in our society, it must have taken courage. So, read this compelling story and form your own opinion. It’s a page-turner. I suspect Lovelace has more to say, though.I gave this 4 stars because of the spelling errors.

I don't usually purchase books about alien abduction, but when I heard the author's account on the Fade to Black radio show I decided I wanted to know the rest of his story. Reading his account was just as compelling as hearing it--if not more. I would have read it in one sitting, but due to other commitments, I had to stop after forty pages. When I did come back to the book, I finished it as I simply had to see the story to the end. I would highly recommend this book to those who are interested in the abduction phenomena. I do hope that the author finds some relief from the drastic change in health he has endured. Speaking out, it seems, has its consequences.

Mysterious Universe podcast tipped me off to this book as well. Would love to hear Terry as a guest on their show. Captivating account of seemingly true events that line up with so many other eyewitness accounts. It's amazing how so many eyewitness accounts on a global scale can be discounted and brushed aside so easily (let alone the physical evidence uncovered in this book). While the book does have a lot of spelling and grammatical errors, that's not the point. The point is to sound the alarm that something is going on right in front of us and we are too closed-minded, blind, or afraid of judgement to pursue it further. I wish Terry had said a little bit more about Toby's eventual demise, but I'm sure it will come up in his interviews.

Never been interested in this type of book before, but something about the author and the reviews made me give it a try. Now I am glad I did. As fantastic as the story sounds, the author sounds completely creditable. All I can say is read it for yourself, then you decide.

I highly enjoyed this independently published account of alien abduction and government witness suppression. Lovelace's narrative echoes many other military witnesses who've experienced unexplainable and downright strange aerial phenomena. His experience suggests a real government long-term effort to suppress witnesses and evidence to UFOs. And Lovelace has the x-ray evidence to prove that something anomalous really happened to him. His story even contains the famed, proverbial "women in black" who continue to haunt him with thinly-veiled threats and unwanted appearances in his life. This is a real page-turner and one that has kept me thinking about it's implications long after I finished reading it.(Dr. Simeon Hein is the author of Black Swan Ghosts: A sociologist encounters witnesses to unexplained aerial craft, their occupants, and other elements of the multiverse,Opening Minds: A Journey of Extraordinary Encounters, Crop Circles, and Resonance, and Planetary Intelligence: 101 Easy Steps to Energy, Well Being, and Natural Insight.)

Jesus and Yahweh: The Names Divine, by Harold Bloom

Amazon.com Review

BloomÂ’s occasional forays into religious criticism are particularly interesting, given his lifelong passion for poetry and his contributions to the study of literature. And while discussions of religion itself are in play here, it is the characters of Jesus and Yahweh that inhabit the pages, and BloomÂ’s literary critic more than his moonlighting theologian examining them. And what of that analysis? Bloom has an obvious affinity for Yahweh over Jesus (even though Jesus gets first billing in the bookÂ’s title.) But to ascribe that preference to his Jewish roots is perhaps too easy. A close reading reveals more. Bloom finds that Yahweh, with his covenants, tempers, resolutions, and even occasional forays into the physical where he fights, eats and walks in the cool of the Garden presents a more interesting character than the rather enigmatic Jesus who only comes truly alive for him in MarkÂ’s gospel, and even more so beyond the canonical scriptures in the Gospel of Thomas. And though in sensibility and identification Bloom hews closer to Yahweh, he acknowledges the place Jesus and his followers have made in the world, through an application of his own theory of the anxiety of influence, noting that "The New Testament frequently is a strong misreading of the Hebrew Bible, and certainly it has persuaded multitudes." Provocative statements like these abound, but Bloom is no provocateur. Whether one agrees or disagrees with his meditations on the names divine, it is hard not to respect his vigorous intellect and bracing candor as he explores their power.--Ed Dobeas

From Publishers Weekly

Prolific literary critic, Yale professor and professional provocateur Bloom (The Book of J) here tackles the characters of the Jewish and Christian gods: what god do we meet in Hebrew Scripture? Who is the Jesus of the New Testament, and does he bear any relation to the Jesus most Americans worship? Does, for that matter, the Hebrew Yahweh resemble the first person of contemporary Christians' Trinity? Bloom, as usual, skewers quite a few sacred cows—for example, he dismisses the quest for the historical Jesus as a waste of time, and says that Jewish-Christian dialogue is a "farce." But in fact Bloom's major points are somewhat commonplace, including his assertion that the Christian reading of Hebrew Scripture laid the groundwork for Christian anti-Semitism. A fair enough charge, but hardly a new one; theologians have observed, and debated, this point for centuries. Bloom's real brilliance lies in his smaller, subtler claims, such as his nuanced discussion of the different ways Matthew, Mark and Luke present Jesus, his assertion that Bible translator William Tyndale anticipated Shakespeare, and his observation that, contra Marx, religion is not the opiate of the people but their "poetry, both bad and good." The book is learned, even erudite, and sure to be controversial. (Oct. 6) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

What an interesting, puzzling book! Even with two years of biblical languages and two years of biblical studies, with auditing classes on the history and philosophy of religion, on philosophy, and on Plato, I still ended up not tracking the author all the way through. That's unusual for me. I feel as if I got anywhere for 35 to 80 percent of what the author alludes to, with many parenthetical excursions, depending on which part of the book I was reading. And he alludes far more than he states. This book is one of the few where I consistently had to go back and reread sentences ... due to Bloom's frequent use of tangential parenthetical phrases. This is part journal, part meta-literature, and part puzzle. Anybody who has read The Book of J will feel both at home and alienated from this tour de force. Bloom assumes the readers' familiarity with themes in his previous works, with Biblical scholarship, with historical criticism, with Shakespeare, Plato, Nietzsche, Kafka, and Freud. And he mostly pulls it off - this book is at least as impactful as Carl Jung's Answer to Job.Bloom missed one theme that naturally follows from the themes he does explore - that of the vulnerability of YHWH. While he doesn't mind looking at YHWH's "capricious" behavior, he doesn't look beyond to the clear vulnerability of YHWH found in the J-source.Nevertheless, this was an incredible and thought provoking book, a masterpiece of theological, philosophical, literary, and personal intrigue, which never truly resolves and leaves the reader puzzling through the enigmas with which Bloom has heroically wrestled.

I really only recommend for those who have found Bloom's previous work rewarding. The book is his rumination on the "characters" of Jesus and Yahweh from a literary, cultural and religious perspective. The main reason for my caveat is that this book seemed sloppily tossed off in stream of consciousness mode. This made it a somewhat exasperating read for me even though I find Bloom to be an insightful thinker. For those that don't know, Bloom is a prominent literary critic with a fairly unique perspective. His initial renown was for his Anxiety of Influence, which outlined his approach to criticism. I particularly enjoyed his take on The Western Canon in a subsequent book. He has expanded his attention to wider cultural and religious criticism in other books, and indeed it rings true that he would have long been ruminating on the relationship between Christianity and Judaism as the ultimate example of the "Anxiety" (fyi, Bloom is writing from a culturally but not particularly religious Jewish point of view). I was interested to find from this book that Bloom finds the Jesus of the Gospel of Mark in particular to be a compellingly "uncanny" character to rival the Yahweh of the "J" thread of what Christians call the "Old Testament".

Harold Bloom, renowned and influential literary critic, has written a very personal exploration and exposition of the conflict in theology between Christianity and Judaism. We discover the topic is a life-long fascination; the author still possesses and treasures after a fashion a volume presented him on his doorstep at age ten by an itinerant missionary: The "New Testament" in Yiddish, a language he grew up with in the '30s of the Bronx.Bloom completely smashes the PC (he avoids this rubric) notion of a "Judeo-Christian heritage." Instead, he argues persuasively, early Christians, including the writers of the four Gospels and Paul, the true founder of the faith, so distorted the Judaic "Tanakh" that the Christian version of the "Old Testament" is in reality a real and calculated misrepresentation (and a gross distortion) of the collected Judaic writings. Among the more surprising assertions--with arguments impressive--is that Christianity is the OLDER of the two religions!Bloom's subtitle is "The Names Divine" and he uses the D word as both noun and verb. "God the Father" of the Christian New Testament is hardly even a shadow of the mercurial and often [in]conveniently absent Yahweh. Without an index or end notes, the work might give the impression of not being scholarly, but Bloom shows on every page that he is steeped in the literature, a life-long passion, and he amply quotes the leading (and some more obscure but pithy) scholars, most of them Christian theologians and biblical students. And of course Bloom is very immersed in the literature that any Bible is and Shakespeare is a frequent visitor in Bloom's pages for comparisons of literary power. This book will likely raise hackles among the more conventionally religious (both Christians and Jews), but it will not be read by any intelligent reader without some gasps and takings away of the breath that, on balance, effectively challenge so much "common wisdom."

Robert Whitlow is one of my favorite authors. In fact, he is also one of my husband’s favorites and one of my book club’s favorites. We are all very excited when a new novel is released. So it was with the great anticipation of a good read that I opened the cover of Chosen People. Oh, my goodness! Chosen People moves up to the top of the list for best book by Whitlow. This book has it all! It gets a highly recommended rating from me.Chosen People is legal drama at its best — an intriguing case, determined attorneys seeking justice, and clients that deserve the best of outcomes. Add to this a timely backdrop of international terrorism, a mix of cultures and beliefs, and the setting of Israel, and you get a book that is sure to please the most discerning of readers. Whitlow has succeeded in bringing to life the vibrant world of modern Israel from the perspectives of Israeli Jew and Arab, and those who visit from other parts of the world. The lawsuit that main characters Hana, Jakob, and Daud pursue is a complex mix of American anti-terrorism laws, financial investigations, and dark underworld connections. It kept this reader engaged throughout. The early parts of the book deal heavily with the case, but it soon becomes apparent that there is danger for all who are connected to the case. And while I loved the intricacies of the law, the characters were the real star. I had several favorites, but it is Hana Abboud, an Israeli Arab Christian working as a lawyer in Atlanta, that captured my imagination. She is obviously skilled in her work, but her faith is real and alive and was inspiring on many levels. She cares for all people regardless of their ethnicity or religion. Hana indeed is a woman who lives out her faith in tangible ways. She describes it to her co-counsel in this way: . . . my relationship with God through Jesus is my core. I know that’s a religious statement, but it’s not just a belief or an idea; it transforms everything about who I am and how I relate to all people, regardless of who they are and where they come from.” (p.354). What a great statement! There are many powerful, faith-filled moments in this book that add a depth to an already excellent legal suspense novel. My book club will be reading Chosen People in the coming months. I cannot wait to hear where our discussion will take us. Grab this book and some friends — you will want to talk about it when you are finished.Highly Recommended.Great for Book Clubs.Audience: Adults.

I have read and enjoyed several of the author's previous books and was attracted to this book because of the story line. It seemed interesting in today's political climate. Christian novels tend to fall into one of two categories. The first is the novel as a "Sermon disguised as a book". The author has a spiritual message they want to convey and they come up with some half way reasonable (or not) plot to use as a context for the 'real' message. They usually aren't too hard to spot. The second category is to try and write a strong story with realistic moments of faith and spirituality woven into but not dominating the story. This particular story seemed to have a hard time determining what it wanted to be. Some of the 'sermonizing' seemed forced and did not help the overall story. For example, how many times do you need to mention the characters praying before a meal? Some parts of the story didn't seem to flow well because you had to get the characters into the right locations to hear the message they were supposed to hear. Maybe it's because when I pick up a novel I'm looking for a compelling story about the main subject with realistic and appropriate 'side stories' that this one just didn't quite do it for me. The story was good but and at times held my interest but not great and the faith part seemed forced much of the time. Three stars all the way.

Robert Whitlow is a favorite author of mine. He lives in North Carolina, and attended the UGA Law School. He writes stories about people living in the South. Well, I also live in the South. South Georgia, in fact, with UGA history and years of vacationing in North Carolina. So, yes, I am partial. I have enjoyed each book Whitlow has written. Now, jump to his new novel, Chosen People. Robert Whitlow has written his finest novel yet!!! It is outstanding on many levels. One, he has matured as a writer and story teller. Two, he has written a complicated plot. Three, he has written a novel that has taught me many tidbits concerning Israel, Arabs, and the Middle East. He has done so with a continuing Christian message, which is not sappy or overstated.Do yourself a favor, buy Chosen People. Do, what I did, and mark the pages that teach you something you did not know about this area of the world, so you can refer to it long after you have finished this novel. You'll be glad you did.

CHOSEN PEOPLE by WhitlowThis book of FULL of plots and mini-plots all introduced as interesting side-stories but none showing a really good reason to be melded into the primary story line. Once I figured that out, I quickly ‘read’ each entire subplot by ‘thumbing through’ the book to isolate/read the chapters related to a that particular subplot. Because the subplots were so unrelated, I found that this approach did not interfere with reading the main plot at all. What it did do was keep the mini-plots from acting as a constant distraction in reading/enjoying the intriguing primary story line presented by the author.

Robert Whitlow is one of my favorite novelists, for both his writing skill and his obvious research into his topics. And, of course, he is a lawyer, which adds depth to the legal aspects of his tales. Owning and having read half a dozen, or more, of his books, I have to rate this as one of his very best, with foreshadowing that just isn't well taught, to everyone who wants to publish books. One character in Chosen People, in particular, seemed utterly genuine, but I could not dismiss entirely just the hint of suspicion that he would prove false. To say more about that would require a spoiler alert, so I will not continue. If you want a novel that is miles above the average book, these days, please read Chosen People.I bought my copy of Chosen People for my Kindle. Had I bought a print copy, I might have torn pages out in my quest to reach the end!

My wife and I lived in New Orleans in the late 70's and I often traveled to Houston and through the Cajun Country but seldom had time to get off the beaten path to spend time in any of the places so well described in this book. The author has really kindled our interest in returning to one of our favorite areas of the country and now that we're retired, we look forward to going back to Louisiana for a vacation with time to investigate some of the regions we never explored previously. He has peaked our curiosity with his descriptions of many places we never knew existed during our three-year residency in New Orleans. We look forward to investigating all the regions and many towns as we eat our way through the state!

This book is fine, has a good bit of info about the state. Somewhat skimpy, little depth in articles. Still, it proved itself useful when I referred to it for where to go. Decent index, but, on Kindle app, word searches worked best.

good

I'll know better after my trip there and try some of their suggestions. We're especially looking forward to their tips on Cajun country.

Old. Out of date. Uninteresting.

Great gift for a retiree.

interesting

My opinion of "off the beaten path" and the author's vary widely. I was looking for more small local oddities and this book doesn't deliver. It has some merits and mentions places I probably wouldn't thought of - and I'll take it along when I take my trip.
