Barbara Roth is a UCLA-educated painter and an art instructor with a teaching credential in art education and adult education. She teaches watercolor, gouache, and mixed-media painting classes from her home studio near San Diego, Calif., and throughout the country. Hugely helpful! I have always struggled with watercolors and been disappointed in how they turn out. This book has been great - I just got it yesterday, sat up late poring over it last night and today....today my watercolor technique has literally taken a huge leap forward. I am so tickled with myself!I love Barbara's straight forward, no-nonsense style. Her step-by-step guidance (with pictures!) on what to do first and what to leave until last is HUGELY helpful. She not only shows you where she shadows but she tells you what colors she used and what she went back over several times. That was huge for me. I love that she also has "fixing mistakes".....other books sort of ignore the entire issue. She not only tells you how to correct or disguise them when they happen but she has the humility to SHOW you her own pictures where she did just that. Not every artist would be so forthcoming.I only wish you had shown us a wee picture of your homemade paint boxes made out of mint tins, Barbara! I would love to have seen them. I really appreciated your thrifty, you-don't-have-to-run-out-and-buy-the-most-expensive-things attitude. It was so refreshing to find someone who makes do with what she has.I really loved this book and am looking forward to working through all of the exercises in it. Really....I was just stunned at how much better my painting was this morning after just one nights read! Wish I'd gotten this years ago...

I'm new to art -- this is a friendly, helpful, and encouraging way to learn how to use watercolors "on the go" -- a step-by-step approach that makes you feel as if the instructor is looking over your shoulder offering encouragement.A great guide for beginners - and others thinking about trying out watercolors.And oh -- the paintings (examples) are beautiful.

I was looking forward to seeing Barbara's book, and it is wonderful! I bought it for a friend who loves to journal with watercolor, and she is really enjoying the "how to" pages in the book, from start to finish, how to create beautiful watercolor scenes in a journal. Barbara is a great teacher, and that shows in her precise, yet fun, instructions in this book. Beautifully done!

This book gives the beginning painter clear, direct instructions for painting on the go. It covers all the bases from putting together a travel kit to using value sketches. I ordered this book because I travel a lot and want to improve my woefully clumsey on-the-go painting skills. I am glad I bought it. Now it is up to me to read and heed. As an aside, the illustrations are a delight. It is worth buying the book just to see them.

Barbara is a terrific teacher. If you've ever told yourself you can't paint, you are wrong and this book will teach you how to do it anywhere! So much fun!

This is a wonderful book for a watercolor beginner like myself. Barbara goes through all the essentials in a "non-threatening" way. She knows how to make the art approachable to anyone. Her whimsical artistic style makes this book fun to follow. I highly recommend this book to any watercolor beginners, hobbyists, and urban sketchers!

How, she wondered, are these young men getting their "education" about sex? Why do they assume so many things about what a woman wants, things that, by and large, a lot of women do NOT want? Answer: they learned it by watching porn.What sets this book apart and makes it, for me, so compelling is her ability to forgo, indeed deny, the usual tired tropes of how porn is awful and everywhere and should be banned, and our children are not safe, blah blah blah. Instead, she opens the door to a much wider dialog. The solutions won't come from any one project or stellar personality. The real "answer" to porn is to both enable the consumer to make intelligent, informed choices based on a full and fair knowledge (there really are good varieties of porn out there) and to promote the idea that sex and love are all about communication, not passive reception and Pavlovian "me too"-isms. To that end, she has succeeded. This book deserves a place on many shelves.

This memoir really got to me. (It was written 7 long years ago and Aisa Bibi is still in prison, in spite of an acquittal by the Pakistani Supreme Court. She is held for her own safety).A simple uneducated village wife and mother, finding her joy in her faith, family and Christian friend, Asia Bibi's husband is a brickmaker and she gets work by tending animals and picking berries. Neither she nor her husband can read. One day she has an argument with a few Muslim women - poor and uneducated like her - after she takes a drink from a cup that they are also drinking from. A few days later she finds herself dragged around the village being beaten for blaspheming. A young mullah tells her she will be safe if she converts to Islam. She refuses. The police are called in - she's arrested and in time sentenced to death.The prison is squalid, no window. The lavatory is an open sewer in her cell. Every so often it has to be cleaned out, but she lives with the stink. Her only rest area is a rope bed. The floor's wet most of the time. She has nowhere to dry her clothes after washing them, so she puts them on to dry. At the time the book was written, she's lived like this for three years.Asia makes it clear that not only Christians suffer from this Blasphemy Law, she had heard of Muslims who unknowingly commit blasphemy and for them, their fate is similar. We also hear, from her exercise time in the prison yard, the stories of other prisoners, sentenced on flimsy or no evidence, or simply for being a victim of rape.The reason I wrote the headline as above, is that we Christians in countries where we're free to practise our religion, are apt to get too comfortable. The book is a plea for Help.Asia doesn't hate or even dislike Muslims for what has happened to her. She asks forgiveness for those who hurt her. She's a strong spirit, seeing some purpose in all this, some greater good...her suffering is terrible, isolation almost unbearable. She longs to hold her children, to embrace her loving husband. They can only touch fingertips through mesh in the visiting area.It's inevitable that a Christian reading this book would ask him or herself how much they would be willing to suffer for their Faith. Like Fr. Gordon McRae, who is widely believed to be a victim of grave injustice, Asia Bibi lives out a martyrdom.

Tell me who is really being abused, who really is a woman of courage? God bless Asia, her family and other Christian martyrs who daily pay the ultimate price for being a true follower of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

On June 14, 2009, Asia Bibi, a wife, mother of 5 children and a Christian, went to harvest fruit for 250 rupees in Pakistan. Thirsty, she went to a water bucket and used the cup to get a drink of water. The other women (all Muslims) working with her turned hysterical at the thought of drinking after a Christian, who are considered unclean. An argument began, then she was chased, beaten and dragged to a police station. There, she was unjustly accused of having blasphemed against the Muslim prophet Mohammad. She was sentenced to death by hanging on November 8, 2010. You will read about the appalling and inhumane conditions Asia and her fellow women prisoners are held in. You will read about the two Pakistani government officials, the Governor of Punjab, and the Minister for Minorities who tried to help Asia and were assassinated by fundamentalists for their efforts. Pakistan's Blasphemy laws persecutes everyone, including other Muslims. Most of Asia's fellow women prisoners were found guilty of the Hudood Ordinance, that makes a criminal of any woman who has sexual relations outside marriage. Most of Asia's fellow inmates had been raped, and then found guilty of adultery, because they could not provide 4 eyewitnesses to their rape, as required by law. Asia asks "Tell other people you know about what has happened to me. Spread the word. I believe this is the only chance I have of not dying in this dungeon. I need you. Help me." As of this date, Asia is still in prison. Please do as she asks and help her.

This story broke my heart. The idea that this woman is still in prison, still sentenced to death, for merely disagreeing with some of the village women who did not think she should drink water from the well only because she is Christian. The women of the village turned in a mob, wanting to harm this woman, who has a child with disabilities, and other small children who need her. The blasphemy laws in much of the Muslim world are there to seek revenge against others. I always thought women would be less cruel than men, but in this case, the women of the village were as mean and vicious as any man alive.I dread to think of her life, and how this is going to end. Everyone please read this book, and write to the government who is supporting this injustice. Perhaps if they receive thousands of letters, they will see how this makes them look to the rest of the world. Ignorant and COLD BLOODED MEAN!

Asia Bibiâ€™s story needs to be told around the global. She is is all of us. She self describes as a poor uneducated farm girl, but her faith and tenacity in the continued face of torment and persecution places her among the giants of this world. This book should be read by all of us. It is a powerful reminder to us all of how far humanity has fallen and how one womanâ€™s faith can give us hope we are not too far gone.

I was surprised by how short a story it was, but it was very well told. Considering that it had to be told to a lawyer or family members and then retold to a translator, it's amazingly well done. The narration is her voice throughout. It's not a happy story, but it is not depressing either, though nothing is glossed over. Unbelievable as to how long this ordeal has dragged on. Sure hope they can get her out!

This book is very informative about how people are treated, especially women, under Islamic rule in Pakistan. In reading this you learn that all minorities are discriminated against as well as Muslims. All it takes is for someone who doesn't like you , to cry "Blasphemy", and you are presumed guilty. What a terrible law.

This is the second of Sujatha Lalgudi's books I've bought, and this one is better. It's about identifying body parts, and each time something is covering up a part of the baby (a dummy in the mouth, mittens on hands, etc) and then it's uncovered.The font is clear and the Hindi is very simple and the pictures aren't amazing but they're big and simple.Good for teaching young toddlers to identify body parts.

It has a weird ending to it. The author is talking about the nose and eyes and all of a sudden he tells the baby to finish his milk. It does not rhyme. But, overall decent book. It should have been a hard cover book for the younger babies.

I ordered this book but found out as soon as I ordered, the 5th edition was being released in Oct. I sent this one back but it is a great resource book and the new one is supposed to have additional information. Some midwifery schools will require the new text, keep that in mind if you're ordering this book for class.

If you are a midwife, you own this book. If you are a student midwife--you will. Varney's is much less holistic than Anne Frye and others, but provides valuable information over a broad range of midwifery topics. A MUST have for researching topics and writing practice guidelines.

I needed several reference books for studying public health and this book even though it was older was well laid out and very informative.

I first learned PHP from Luke Welling and Laura Thomson's excellent "PHP and MySQL Web Development," and bought 'MySQL/PHP Database Applications' to provide an alternative perspective on solving problems. Unfortunately, this book doesn't offer enough content to warrant its high price.A full 58 pages is devoted to a PHP function reference which is a bit of a joke because PHP has one of the better online function references available. Code examples are printed with very large font again taking up more space than is necessary.Most important, though, some of these examples are a little bit suspect.They present a Catalog application written using Object Oriented Programming (OOP). This would have been valuable except that the classes they create are so specific that they couldn't be re-used -- basically negating the value of OOP to begin with.They do provide a couple of examples of good and bad relational database schema, but that isn't really worth the cost of this book.

I'm puzzled by the negative reviews. I'm a 30 year vet in computing, recently retired, and doing web/tech computing part time. I've needed to grasp parts of computing that I haven't been involved with, and boy did these guys get it right!I loved the comment about "The bulk of this chapter is for those of you who have made it to the early 21st century without working with relational databases!" That's me! And the writing was just right in terms of code hints and kinks along with clear explainations of database concepts.I'm reading the first edition, saw the second edition was out, and ordered it.I will agree, however, that there are *many* editing mistakes where they mistake terms or have errors in their tables/code. Hopefully the 2nd edition solves this.

Amazon makes you leave a heading and a comment so I am typing this up to say its a good product and does what it says. If you are reading this, buy it. I don't leave 5 stars unless the product exceeds my demanding expectations. If it falls short of doing 100% of what it says, I leave 1 star.

This book is in excellent shape. This is a great reference book for Web Developers or Programmers who write PHP to SQL databases.

Good information.

I bought this book knowing next to nothing about PHP or MySQL. (I did have experience with Active Server Pages so I was familiar with using scripting languages in sites.) It has served as a great reference for me in learning PHP and becoming familiar with MySQL. PHP and MySQL are often used together in building sites and providing everything from installation instructions to function references is a great help. If information exists on a function that is out of the scope of this book, the authors refer you to specific pages on the Web that will provide you with those details.The index could use a little beefing up and there are a lot of typos, but the typos have not taken away from the usefulness of the book.This is the only book I have bought on PHP and MySQL and I don't feel inclined to buy another-- this one is just fine.

As a general overview, the content of the book is pretty good, and would have been great... but the authors and editors do a VERY poor job of being specific where necessary, verifying that the scripts offered in the text actually run, and explaining the concepts and language constructs before using them. For the beginner, this book would be confusing as all hell, due to the vague descriptions and error filled examples. For the experienced programmer looking to pick up PHP & mySQL skills, the book is pretty much an exercise in debugging and wince-management as the stream of vague descriptions of the topic at hand wash over you, or some language construct is used with no information about it anywhere close.

The authors provide a good coverage of using PHP and MySQL. They guide the reader through the elements of the language and using PHP and MySQL together well. I also found the summary of MySQL functions and the PHP function reference in the appendix to be helpful. Several example application systems are provided that are very relevant to current practical web database system applications, this is a big plus. Another nice feature of the examples is a database schema is included for each application -- nice touch!... but the text is somewhat awkward, I fault the publisher. My first comment is that the code samples and snippets in the text are TOO LARGE, the font appears to be about 2 sizes larger than the body text. Also, the headings and subheadings in each chapter are hard to distinguish, maybe this is an M&T Books standard. I don't mean to be picky but I had a hard time reading the text and the large font probably added 80 pages to the book. Also, more screenshots could have been provided for the applications showing the user interface.

The book is done quite well. The section on France is the strongest section. From there on it's just okay. The skip threw the other countries leaves me wanting so much more. In particular the examination of Italy lacks depth and real understanding. Spain might as well not make wine and Germany is as white as Riesling.

I work as a sommelier in Midtown Manhattan and this is the single best resource I've found on the topic of wine. Extremely applicable to the products we sell with incredible comparative notes on the villages of Burgundy. Super user friendly and applicable. Incredible photography from the great estates and the writing is zippy and delicious! Superb.

Informative yet easy to read and browse through the different sections. Their writing style paints a true picture in your head of the wines and regions youâ€™re reading about. If you read their first book Secrets of the Sommeliers, this is an incredible, in-depth follow up.

When I read and study about wine, I always want a map for reference.You see the word â€œAtlasâ€ in the title, and you think...well, you know.NO MAPS. References to Regions, but absolutely NO visuals.Good information but incomplete for my taste.

Bought this as a gift for a wine lover. He seemed to really like it!

This is a great book on European wines and regions!!

Thorough explanations of terroir helping one to appreciate what one can find, smell and taste in classic wines
